FYI Schedule of Upcoming Releases, Jan. 12, 2018

As well as our usual calendar of new releases, this week we are singling out new offerings (and some important reissues) from a few notable Canadian artists heading our way in the next few months.

The holiday drought of new album releases is coming to an end, with a bumper crop on tap for next week.


We're also focusing on albums from prominent Canadian artists that'll be reaching cyberspace and your local retailer over the next three months. Here's our list, but please note release dates are always subject to change.

Meghan Patrick - Country Music Made Me Do It  (Warner Music Canada). This is the second album from one of Canadian country music's biggest female stars. It was written shortly after Patrick moved to Nashville, and features confident original ballads written from a strong female perspective. Out Jan. 12.

Denny DohertyOf All Things (Complete ABC/Dunhill Masters). This archive release from the sole Canadian member of '60s faves The Mamas and the Papas is built around Doherty's s 1971 solo album on the ABC/Dunhill label, Watcha Gonna Do, long a collectors item. The reissue includes six bonus tracks, five previously unreleased. Jan. 12.

RushMoving Pictures: Live 2011 (Vinyl - Anthem). This recording of the first time the prog rock heroes performed their classic album in its entirely is collected on 180 gram vinyl  and features brand new artwork. The original Moving Pictures album came out in 1981. It reached No. 1 in Canada and No. 3 in the UK and US. It is Rush's selling album in the US, with over 4 million copies sold. Jan. 12

BahamasEarthtones (Brushfire/Republic/UMC)  The mellow Toronto-based singer/songwriter (born Afie Jurvanen) has steadily built an audience large enough to justify headlining Massey Hall. He has an extensive North American tour planned to support this keenly-awaited album. Jan. 19

Cadence WeaponS/T (eOne Music). The Polaris-shortlisted rapper (real name Rollie Pemberton) gained recognition in 2009 when he was named Edmonton's poet laureate.. After an absence from the spotlight, he returns with a new release (his fourth) and a new record label. Jan. 19.

Gord Bamford Neon Smoke (Sony) The Australian/Canadian country singer is a multiple Juno and CCMA Award winner, and is one of the genre's most popular performers. This is his seventh album. Read more about it here. Jan. 19.

Tune-Yards - I Can Feel You Creep Into My Private Life (4AD): Now officially a duo, Tune-Yards comprises lyricist Merrill Garbus and producer/songwriter Nate Brenner. This follow-up to 2014's Nikki Nack is said in a press release to comprise " intense subject matter, but is Tune-Yards’ most immediate and upbeat music yet." Jan. 19.

Anvil Pounding the Pavement  (SPV/Steamhammer) These metal merchants have been pounding the pavement for four full decades now. This new album (also available as a double vinyl LP) was recorded at the Soundlodge studios in Rhauderfehn in Germany, with studio owner Jörg Uken acting as producer. Jan. 19.

Big WreckIn Loving Memory Of (reissue, vinyl - Universal). The platinum-selling hard rock band celebrate the 20th-anniversary of this debut album with a deluxe reissue. In Loving Memory Of... featured such rock radio hit singles as "The Oaf," That Song" and "Blown Wide Open." Jan. 19.

The Jim Cuddy Band -Constellation (Warner). Aside from recording and touring with Blue Rodeo, Jim keeps busy with a solo project featuring some stellar musicians. This is the rootsy songsmith's fourth album since his 1998 solo debut, All The Time. That record and second album The Light That Guides You Home are both certified gold. Jan. 26

Zaki IbrahimThe Secret Life Of Planets (Indie). This South African/Canadian singer/songwriter has an eclectic sound that has been dubbed "sci-fi soul." She made a splash with her debut full-length album, Every Opposite, which placed on the Polaris Prize shortlist in 2013. Jan. 31.

The SheepdogsChanging Colours (Warner). The popular Saskatoon-reared rockers with a retro boogie sound return to the fray with their sixth album. Brothers Ewan and Shamus Currie recently found success with a musically diverse side-project, BROS. Feb. 2. 

RhyeBlood  (Last Gang). This LA-based project is spearheaded by Canadian singer/songwriter Milosh. The 2013 Rhye debut, Woman, became a streaming smash via such tracks as "Open," and "The Fall," and the hauntingly androgynous falsetto voice of Milosh is a potent weapon. Feb. 2.

Jann ArdenThese Are The Days (Independent). 2018 is shaping up to be quite a year for the much-loved pop songstress. She was recently named to the Order of Canada, and her latest book is earning rave reviews. Feb. 2.

Born Ruffians Uncle, Duke & The Chief (Paper Bag):  The Toronto-based indie rock trio has developed a sizeable following over the past decade, thanks to a quirky but melodic sound. Word is that the new album deals with some serious topics, but in an uplifting fashion. An extensive North American tour begins March 1 in Montreal. Feb. 16.

U.S. Girls - In a Poem Unlimited (Royal Mountain/4AD). This adventurous Toronto band is led by a passionate singer/songwriter, Meghan Remy. The 2015 U.S. Girls album, Half Free, was a critical fave, as evidenced by its Polaris shortlisting and Juno nomination in 2016. Feb. 16.

Ought - Room Inside The World (Royal Mountain). This is the third album from the highly-regarded post-punk combo, and their first for Merge/Royal Mountain. Recorded with producer Nicolas Vernhes (Deerhunter, Animal Collective), it is said to explore "themes that have always concerned the band — identity, connection, survival in a precarious world — but with a bolder, more nuanced sound palette." Feb. 16.

Suuns - Felt (Secret City) This underground rock band from Montreal has earned accolades from the likes of The New York Times and Pitchfork for its aggressive yet atmospheric sound. This will be the group's fourth album, and it was recorded at Jace Lasek's Breakglass studio. March 2.

Leonard Cohen The Archives (6CD classic broadcast recordings set - Sony). The late great bard of Montreal's reputation as a compelling performer will be enhanced by this 6 CD box set. It features some of his finest live performances, covering concerts in Montreux, Bonn and Zurich, from 1976 to 1993. March 9.

Kardinal Offishall - Kardinal Presents Celebrity Marauders (In Our Dreams/EMPIRE/Universal Music). One of the godfathers of Canadian hip-hop returns with a new project showcasing a diverse circle of creative talents, including Joey Montana and Pree. No official release date for the EP yet.

Our Lady Peace - Somethingness Volume 2 (Independent). The veteran modern rockers recently delivered the first in a two-volume EP series. The second instalment includes "Ballad of A Poet" a heartfelt tribute to friend, Gord Downie. OLP team with Matthew Good for a major cross-country tour in March. Release date tba.

Jade Eagleson, The Reklaws Lead CMAOntario Nominations in 2024

The Country Music Association of Ontario has announced the nominations for its 12th annual CMAOntario Awards, with Jade Eagleson racking up five nominations. The awards will be presented on June 2 at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga.

Jade Eagleson is poised to win big at the CMAOntario Awards, presented by the Country Music Association of Ontario.

The "Rodeo Queen" singer picked up five awards nominations today, including Single of the Year, Album/EP of the Year, and Male Artist of the Year — the most nominations of any artist. Eagleson is followed by sibling duo The Reklaws, rising artists Josh Ross and Karli June, and mainstay Meghan Patrick, who all have four nominations each.
