The Royal Foundry - "All We Have" (Independent): This Edmonton-based alt-pop quartet is led by husband and wife Jared Salte and Bethany Schumacher.
The two singer/songwriters began as an acoustic folk duo in 2013. In a press release, Salte explains that “When we started, it was economical to do the singer-songwriter duo thing – grab an acoustic guitar and banjo and that’s all you need. Doing it in that simple manner was a great opportunity for us to learn how to write with one another, and we treasure those moments. But we found ourselves wanting to do bigger things musically, with more dynamics, so we started experimenting with programming and keyboards.”
This new single shows how far their sound has evolved. It is now an eclectic hybrid drawing upon progressive and modern rock and synth-pop. Interwoven male and female vocals are at times reminiscent of Whitehorse, while the lush production is the icing on the cake. We sense strong radio potential for this one. The eye-catching drones-filmed video clip is an asset too.
An earlier version of “All We Have” received international exposure through the John Lennon Songwriting Competition and ABC’s Rookie Blue. In 2015, the duo won $75K as part of the Peak Performance Project for their song "Running Away."
On Aug. 15, The Royal Foundry will release its full-length album, Lost In Your Head. An extensive tour to support it has been scheduled, beginning with a show at the Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg on Aug. 12, and closing out at Hamilton's This Ain't Hollywood on Oct. 29. A hometown CD release show is at The Needle Vinyl Tavern on Aug. 24.
Of note: Jared Salte is the son of popular Christian music artist and preacher Arlen Salte.
